North East Autism Society

The North East Autism Society (NEAS) is the largest specialist provider of support and services for people with autism in the North East. The charity was founded in 1980 by a group of parents whose children, with autism, were unable to access the support the parents felt their children needed to thrive and develop. The society became a registered charity in 1993.

There is an estimated 26,000 people in the North East that would feature as having a condition on the autism spectrum [1% of the population] and many more who could be affected by the condition but may not have been formally diagnosed.

The charity provides support and services to children, young people and adults with autism in the form of education for 4 to 25 year olds, vocational training and independent living skills for those aged over 19 years and also have nearly 30 residential and supported living homes in the area. In addition to this the charity works directly with the parents of children with autism offering family support, respite and emergency help 24/7.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service

The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) operates three helicopter air ambulances across region, the aircraft fly in excess of 1,000 missions every year. The vast majority of these are dealing with the most seriously ill patients. The most common cause for call out is road traffic accident, while horse riding, and hiking injuries are also prevalent.

The aircraft carries cutting edge medical equipment, as well as specialist trauma doctors and highly trained paramedics. GNAAS brings the emergency ward to the scene, offering an unparalleled level of care to those in need. The care doesn't stop mid-flight – patients are often treated during their transfer from scene to hospital.

The aircraft can reach speeds of up to 190 miles per hour, and can fly in testing conditions including wind, low cloud and rain. All three aircrafts have been bought by the charity, but must now be sustained by the public. It costs £4m every year to keep this service going, and this is all raised through the public, with no Government funding in place. We need your help today – will you need ours tomorrow?
