The Changing Lives Christmas Meal will be returning Café 16 in Newcastle Cathedral this festive period, and we need the support and kindness of the North East community.
For just £5 your donation will provide a warm Christmas dinner to someone less fortunate in our local community. For many it may be the only Christmas gift they receive - show you care by giving a small Christmas gift which will make someone’s Christmas.

Changing Lives began as a soup kitchen in 1970, and they are now a nationwide charity helping people facing the most challenging of circumstances make positive change - for good. Every year, Changing Lives support over 14,500 people to overcome the challenges they face and go on to live happy, independent, fulfilling lives. They support people who are experiencing homelessness, unemployment, in recovery or facing abuse or exploitation. Changing Lives know that given the right support, anyone can change their life for the better.
The meal will be served out of Café 16 at Newcastle Cathedral which is operated by the Oswin Project, a local charity based at HMP Northumberland. Since 2012, the Oswin Project has been committed to mentoring, training, and supporting individuals with criminal records across the North East. Since its opening in 2021, the café has offered meaningful opportunities for people to gain employment, learn new skills, and build a fresh start. Prisoners who work for the charity inside HMP Northumberland can go on to work in the Cafe on day release or once they have finished their sentence. The charity’s work aligns with the Cathedral’s Lantern Initiative, which seeks to walk and work alongside those facing dark and difficult circumstances in life.
As rough sleeping increases by 27% in 2023, Changing Lives has seen an increase in people needing their support due to the cost-of-living crisis. The cost-of-living crisis has had a devastating impact on people with existing vulnerabilities, many of the people we support are already deeply affected by experiences of poverty and disadvantage.
This year more than ever, Changing Lives need help and support to enable their work to continue to provide longer-term, meaningful support to people in our community and therefore we have introduced an option as well as a one-off donation to make a small monthly donation to help support people who need it all year round.
Instead of buying that festive coffee or sending out Christmas Cards this year, why not take that saving and donate £5 and make a true difference this Christmas.
