The Christmas Eve meal event is officially returning this Christmas Eve at Café 16 in Newcastle Cathedral, and Changing Lives need the support and kindness from the North East community.
Changing Lives began as a soup kitchen in 1970 and are we now a nationwide charity helping people facing the most challenging of circumstances make positive change - for good. We support people who are experiencing homelessness, unemployment, in recovery or facing abuse or exploitation.
Every year, Changing Lives support thousands of people to overcome the challenges they face and go on to live happy, independent, fulfilling lives. We believe that everyone deserves a safe home, a rewarding job and a life free from addiction or abuse. We know that given the right support, anyone can change their life for the better.
Café 16 in Newcastle Cathedral will open its doors to Changing Lives this Christmas Eve and their amazing team will be on hand to serve people in real need in our community a hot meal and spread some festive joy too.
For just £5 your donation will provide a warm Christmas Eve dinner to someone less fortunate in our local community. For many it may be the only Christmas gift they get - show you care by giving this small Christmas gift which will make someone’s Christmas.
Café 16 opened in Newcastle Cathedral in summer 2021, following the Cathedral’s redevelopment supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which has made the building a more accessible and versatile space. The café is staffed by a team of prison leavers, led, trained and mentored by the Oswin Project – offering the chance to learn new skills and find a new direction on release.
As rough sleeping increases by 26% in 2022, the number of bed spaces available to people experiencing homelessness has increased by a fifth. Changing Lives has seen an increase in people needing their support due to the cost-of-living crisis. The cost of living has had a devastating impact on people with existing vulnerabilities, many of the people we support are already deeply affected by experiences of poverty and disadvantage.
In 2022, over 80% of Changing Lives services had seen an increase in the number of people who were no longer able to make ends meet. Experiences of food poverty and hunger are becoming commonplace.
Changing Lives and Newcastle Cathedral have collaborated several times as part of the Cathedral’s Lantern Initiative, which, inspired by the building’s Lantern Tower, aims to be a beacon for people navigating difficult circumstances in life.
Instead of buying that festive coffee or sending out Christmas Cards, why not take that saving and donate £5 and you could make someone’s Christmas. Should the fundraising total more than they need on the day, the money will provide the below for people facing poverty in the North-East this winter (and our support all year round):
This year more than ever, Changing Lives need help and support to enable their work to continue to provide longer-term, meaningful support to people in our community and therefore we have introduced an option as well as a one-off donation to make a small monthly donation to help support people who need it all year round.
Donate now and make someone’s Christmas…
